The car is only insured during the booking period, this is why it is important that you are on time. Of course you can discuss a suitable time to pick up the car (check-in can start 30 min before the rental starts) but it is not possible to pick up the car any sooner and you are also supposed to be back on time.
If you do want to pick up the car sooner the booking needs to be cancelled and you will have to request a new booking with the right booking period.
If you know beforehand that you will be late you will need to extend the booking.
Sometimes one of you is slightly delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. Try to keep in touch with each other and indicate your preference concerning updates in case this occurs.
