Car settings

In this article you will find all the information concerning the settings you can choose from when you are renting out your car on SnappCar. To set up or adjust your settings you can go to 'My Cars', 'Edit car & calendar' and select your car.

How does the calendar work?

The calendar allows you to keep track of the availability of your car. If your car is unavailable for renters, you can indicate this in the calendar and your car won’t be shown in the search results for renters whose rental period includes those periods.

 

Half days and whole days

If the rental is shorter than 5 hours, the renter pays 50% of the day price, meaning that the rental income will be calculated using 50% of the day price as a starting point. The renter will also receive 50% of the number of free kilometers per day. If you do not want to receive rental requests for periods shorter than 1 day, you set a minimum rental period. Can I determine my price?

Yes, you are free to determine your price for both a day’s rental and any extra kilometers driven, within a upper and lower bandwidth set by SnappCar. SnappCar uses several known features of the car to calculate the recommended price. These include car type, car age and other aspects. If you have a special car (e.g. old timer or campervan) and want to set the price to a higher or lower amount than the SnappCar recommendation, please select ‘Special car’. This will allow you to choose any price between €25 and €500. This option is not meant for regular cars.

A good price is a price which makes the owner feel comfortable and is attracting enough for renters to want to rent a car. This is also related to other cars available in your area and their settings. You can also consider other price items such as the number of free kilometers you set and the price per kilometer. Renters mainly look for cars with more km included and tend to choose these cars, even if they are higher priced as they want price clarity up front.

 

Wat is the preparation time? 

Preparation time is the minimum amount of time between the receival of the rental request and the start of the booking. If do not wish to receive last minute requests for instance, you can set the preparation time to the time period that makes you feel comfortable. Renters will not be able to send rental requests if the rental period starts before your preparation window ends.

 

How do I determine the number of free kilometers?

Owners are free to set the number of free kilometers until the maximum number of 300 kilometers per day. SnappCar suggests that you play around with the number of free kilometers until you find a number with which you feel comfortable while still receiving sufficient rental requests. The number of free kilometers is calculated in the same way as the price. If a renter extends the booking and increases the number of rental days, the renter will receive the extra free kilometers as well.

 

Where do I add photos?

If you add a car to your profile for the first time, you will be asked to upload photos. If you have already added a car to your profile and you want to add photos later, visit your car’s profile on our website or app. See below on how to do this on our website and apps:

Web: Go to ‘My cars’ -> ‘Edit car & calendar’ -> ‘Car settings’. You can add more photos here, as well as remove current photos.

Apps: Tap ‘Cars’ -> ‘Edit photos’.

 

Where do I add existing damages?

Existing damages can be added through your car profile. See below on how to do this on our website and apps: Web: go to ‘My cars’ - ‘Edit car & calendar’ - ‘view damages’. Click the blue ‘plus’ sign to add a new damage. App: Tap ‘Cars’ - Damages’. Click the blue ‘plus’ sign to add a new damage.

 

What is the long duration discount?

Owners can set up a long duration discount, making their car more attractive for renters to rent the car for longer periods. By switching on this setting, which can be found in the car setting menu, renters get a 15% discount on the day price if the rental is longer than 3 days. The discount given is automatically deducted from the rental income.

 

What is Instant Booking?

Instant Booking is a feature for owners which allows renters to directly pay for a rental period if the car is available. After payment, the rental period is finalised. By enabling Instant Booking, you are stating that the availability of your car will be up to date at all times. You will no longer need to accept or deny rental requests: all requests are accepted automatically and renters can pay directly after sending the request.


What is Smart Pricing?

Based on the daily price that you have selected for your car, Smart Pricing will increase or decrease it to match demand. So when demand for a car is higher, your price goes up. And when demand is low, your price also goes down. All this calculation happens automatically and is regularly updated for you.

 

Here is an example:

This is a car with a daily price of €40,00 and how prices might vary over a weekend in mid December with Smart Pricing on. On the high demand days, Saturday and Sunday, the price is higher, maximizing earning potential. On a lower demand day like Monday the price is lower, increasing the chances of doing a rental on what is typically a much quieter day. If you change the daily price, Smart Pricing will recalculate your prices for you. So you are free to tweak your daily price to see what works best for you.

 

What are pick-up/drop-off times?

Pick-up and drop-off times are used to indicate on which times during which days you are available to do the check-in or check-out. If your car is available to rent but you are home until 9:00, you can only accept bookings that start before 9:00. By using the pick-up/drop-off times you can easily manage requests and increase the chances of receiving successful rental requests

 

Can I prohibit renters from smoking in my car?

Yes, as an owner you can indicate whether or not renters are allowed to smoke in your car. If a renter smokes in your car even though you indicated this is not allowed, please see this article on how to let SnappCar know.


What does ‘special car’ mean?

The ‘special car’ option is meant for cars that are very rare (e.g. old timers) or have special features added to it (e.g. camper vans). In these special cases, the recommended SnappCar price may not be representative for the vehicle. Selecting this option enables owner to set a price from anywhere between €25 and €500. Renters are not made aware of the fact that the owner has selected this option.

Can I set a minimum age for renters?

Yes, you can set a minimum age of 25, 35 or 45 years old in the car settings menu.
