My rental car broke down, what do I do?

Are you experiencing a breakdown or did you damage the car and are you unable to drive the car anymore? Call Roadside Assistance immediately.

Also immediately call Roadside Assistance whenever the dashboard shows warning signals. Never continue driving whilst warning signals are displayed.

You can call the Roadside Assistance via the SnappCar app:

  1. Go to ‘My Bookings’
  2. Select the active booking
  3. Scroll down to “Contact Support”
  4. Choose menu option 1 for Roadside Assistance

In case of a breakdown you should also contact the owner. When the car needs a repair, the owner has to be consulted about this. The Roadside Assistance handles the breakdown, will determine the cause of the problem and, if necessary, send help. When the problem cannot be solved on the spot, the car will be towed to a garage by a salvaging truck.

If the car cannot be repaired at the location of the breakdown by the mechanic sent by our Roadside Assistance, we ask you to do the check-out. You can start the check-out from the booking overview in the SnappCar app or website. Register the current mileage fuel level and take photo’s of any damage. This will automatically start our damage process and will inform our insurer Allianz.

Will I get a replacement vehicle if the car cannot be repaired?

The goal of the Roadside Assistance is to get you on the road again as quickly as possible. If this can’t be done on the spot, the Roadside Assistance can choose to arrange alternative transportation via public transport or via a rental car.

Which option is chosen depends on the situation and will be decided in consultation with you and SnappCar. Within the Netherlands the maximum period for a replacement car is 2 days.

Will I get Roadside Assistance when I travel abroad?

Whenever you travel outside of the Netherlands, you will receive Roadside Assistance if you have paid for abroad coverage and if the owner agreed with taking the car abroad. Always check these requirements before you hit the road. Have you not selected abroad coverage and do you still take the car abroad? Then our roadside assistance can help you, but the total costs will be charged to you. Please note this can lead to amounts of thousands of euros.

For breakdowns that occur abroad there is a waiting period for reparation. This waiting time is four days. Whenever the car cannot be repaired within those four days, the car will be transported to the Netherlands. A replacement car can be arranged in consultation with SnappCar for a period of four days maximum.

Our Roadside Assistance focuses on servicing any stranded vehicle and to help you as a renter on your way again. We don’t cover any subsequent costs. We therefore recommend checking your travel insurance well before the start of your trip. Such insurance might be able to cover hotel costs, meals and  losing a driver and/or vehicle.

Do I get reimbursed for an overnight stay when my car breaks down?

No, the SnappCar insurance does not reimburse costs for overnight stays due to a breakdown. We recommend a travel insurance to cover those type of expenses.

Extra charges for breakdown assistance in case of non-covered events

We charge an additional €100 for each breakdown incident when breakdown assistance is required for the following events:

  • Refueling with the wrong fuel
  • Vehicle breakdown due to failure to refuel or recharge in time
  • Flat battery due to leaving lights on
  • Keys locked inside the vehicle
