Damaged a SnappCar vehicle? Find out what to do, how to report damage through the app, and what happens after your report is submitted.

Damaged a shared car: what now?

Damage is never ideal, but accidents can happen. Fortunately, the process is straightforward. In this article, we'll explain what to do if you've damaged a rental car, how to report it, and what happens after your report is submitted.

Do you need to report damage to SnappCar?

Yes, always. Even minor damage, such as a scratch or dent, should be reported immediately through the app and communicated to the owner. Reporting damage helps avoid disputes later and ensures the claims process starts as soon as possible.

Can you continue driving after damage occurs?

That depends on the type of damage. If the damage is purely cosmetic, such as a small scratch or dent, you can often continue your trip. However, you should always inform the owner immediately and take clear photos of the damage. Not sure whether the vehicle is still safe to drive? Or is the damage more serious? Contact roadside assistance right away. Safety should always come first. You can contact roadside assistance by calling us through the app and selecting option 1 from the menu.

What should you do if another party is involved?

If another vehicle or person is involved, gather as much information as possible at the scene:

  • Name and driver's licence number of the other party

  • Vehicle registration number

  • Contact details of any witnesses

In the Netherlands and Germany, you are required to complete a European Accident Statement Form. If you don't have one available, you can download it here.

How to report damage

Reporting damage is simple and can be done through the SnappCar app during check-out.

You'll be asked to:

  • Upload photos of the damage

  • Provide a brief description of what happened

Once the report has been submitted, we immediately forward it to our insurance partner, Allianz. Allianz will then take over the claim handling process.

What happens when a shared car is damaged?

The damage process consists of four steps:

  1. Report: You report the damage through the app. Allianz automatically receives the claim.

  2. Confirmation: As soon as a claim reference number has been created, both you and the owner will be notified. You'll need this number if you have questions for Allianz.

  3. Assessment: Allianz will assess whether the damage is covered under the insurance policy. If the damage is covered, your applicable deductible (excess) will be charged.

  4. Resolution: If the damage is not covered by the insurance policy, you and the owner will need to reach a solution together. SnappCar will assist where possible.

What should you do if you're involved in an accident with a shared car?

Follow these steps:

  1. Ensure everyone's safety first. Move the vehicle to a safe location if possible and switch on the hazard lights.

  2. Contact roadside assistance through the SnappCar app if you cannot continue driving. Select option 1 from the menu.

  3. Collect information if another party is involved.

  4. Take as many photos of the damage and the situation as possible.

  5. Report the damage through the app during check-out.

  6. Inform the owner by sending a message through the app.

Who is liable for damage to a shared car?

As the renter, you are liable for damage that occurs during the rental period, up to the amount of your deductible (excess). The exact amount depends on the insurance option selected when you made the booking.

What is the deductible (excess) at SnappCar?

The deductible varies per booking and depends on both your risk profile and the vehicle's profile. During the booking process, you may have the option to choose a reduced deductible. If you selected this option, the lower deductible will apply unless you have violated the insurance terms and conditions. Want to learn more? Read everything about insurance at SnappCar.
