Damage caused during the rental period, what now?

Updated over 3 months ago

Damage is never intentional, but it can happen. Fortunately, the process is straightforward. In this article, we explain what to do if you have caused damage, how the reporting process works, and what happens after you report it.

Can I continue driving after damage?

That depends. If the damage is purely cosmetic, such as a scratch or dent, you can often continue driving. Always notify the owner immediately and take clear photos of the damage.

Not sure if the car is still safe? Or is the damage serious? Then contact roadside assistance. Safety always comes first. You can reach roadside assistance by calling us via the app and pressing 1 in the menu.

Reporting damage: how to do it

You can easily report damage via the SnappCar app during check-out. Add photos and briefly describe what happened. Once we receive the report, we will forward it directly to our insurer, Allianz. They will then take over the report.

Was another party involved?

In that case, collect as much information as possible:

  • Name and driver's license number of the other party

  • License plate number of the vehicle

  • Any witnesses and their contact details

In the Netherlands and Germany, it is mandatory to fill out a European accident statement form. Make sure to always have this with you when you're on the road. If not, you can also download it here.

What happens after the damage report?

  1. Reporting damage. You report the damage via the app. Allianz receives this report automatically.

  2. Confirmation. As soon as a claim number has been assigned, we will notify you and the owner. You can use this number when contacting Allianz with any questions.

  3. Assessment by Allianz. Allianz will investigate whether the damage is covered by the insurance. If so, we will charge you, the tenant, the deductible. During the rental period, you are liable for up to the amount of the deductible. Have you opted for a reduced deductible? Then that lower amount applies, unless you have violated the terms and conditions.

  4. Damage not covered? Then you and the owner will have to come to a solution between yourselves. We will help where we can, but we cannot guarantee anything.
