How does automatic fuel reimbursement work for keyless cars?

For supported keyless cars, SnappCar can automatically read the vehicle's fuel level. This means you no longer need to manually calculate or settle fuel usage after a rental.

This article explains how automatic fuel reimbursement works, when it's available, and how fuel costs are calculated.

How does automatic fuel reimbursement work?

At the start and end of each rental, we automatically read the car's fuel level during check-in and check-out. The difference between these two measurements determines how much fuel was used and whether any reimbursement is required.

You can always view the recorded fuel levels for both check-in and check-out in the booking overview, so you can see exactly how the calculation was made.

Which cars support this feature?

Automatic fuel reimbursement is only available for supported keyless cars.

Currently, around 85% of keyless cars can automatically report their fuel level. If your car doesn't support this feature, you and the renter should agree on the fuel level as usual.

If you rent out a non-keyless car, automatic fuel reimbursement is not available. In that case, you and the renter should settle the fuel level between yourselves.

My car should support this feature, but it isn't working

In some cases, a car supports fuel level reporting, but we're unable to receive a reliable reading.

If this happens, please contact SnappCar Support through the app. We'll investigate the issue. Until then, you and the renter should settle the fuel level manually.

How are fuel charges calculated?

We apply a 1% tolerance to fuel level measurements.

  • If the fuel difference exceeds 1%, the renter pays for the value of the missing fuel.

  • If the difference exceeds 10% of the tank capacity, we also charge a fixed €10 refuelling fee. This compensates the owner for the time and effort required to refill the tank.

  • A 10% service fee is deducted from the total amount (fuel costs plus any refuelling fee).

All charges are shown in the booking cost overview.

How is the fuel price determined?

The value of the missing fuel is calculated using the latest average fuel prices published by CBS (Statistics Netherlands).

Because these prices are not updated in real time, they may differ slightly from the fuel price at your local petrol station.

What will I receive as an owner?

As the owner, you'll receive:

  • The value of the missing fuel, calculated using the average fuel prices published by CBS.

  • An additional €10 refuelling fee if the fuel difference exceeds 10% of the tank capacity.

A 10% service fee is deducted from the total amount for processing.

For supported vehicles, you don't need to arrange fuel reimbursement yourself—SnappCar automatically handles the reimbursement.

I don't agree with the fuel charges

If you believe the recorded fuel level is incorrect or you disagree with the calculation, please contact SnappCar Support through your booking. We'll review the fuel readings and reimbursement with you.

For cars that don't support automatic fuel reimbursement, fuel disputes are handled through the standard fuel dispute process.

What about electric vehicles?

We're working on a similar automated solution for charging costs for electric vehicles. This feature isn't available yet, but we'll let you know as soon as it becomes available.
